Shotguns can damage multiple targets, which I suppose might be nice if you face a ton of low-level mobsters. Rifles and sniper rifles do (very) high damage and allow you to single out targets at long range. Pistols are versatile and can do high damage to one or two targets, and the +10 damage bullets apply to both shots. I like pistols and (sniper) rifles, but more out of style than out of strategy, to be honest with you.
