Sneaky Gamer is recognizable to fans of the Wii U’s Game & Wario, and much longer than a microgame, focussed on playing past bedtime while avoiding the intense star of a vigilant mom. There are nine altogether, focused on recording high scores (calling all chasers), so I’ll just focus on a couple of my favorites. While I beat the story mode in just a couple of hours, there’s additional content that’ll keep you playing after the credits roll.Ĭhallenge modes let you tackle the microgames in unique and easier said than done ways. There are even a few games that use the microphone. You’ll be using traditional button inputs, breaking out the stylus for touch screen control, and taking advantage of the system’s gyroscope. The story mode introduces leagues, which are divided based on control style. Come to find out the entire game is fully voiced, which really brings the personalities of the largely fantastic characters of Diamond City to life! The presentation makes even the usual feel fresh, as does the way the microgames are laid out. Hearing sly Wario in the fully voiced introduction really impressed me – Charles Martinet is definitely on point.

WarioWare Gold is the biggest collection in the series to date, and it might just be the best. The blend isn’t dissimilar to another 3DS gem, Rhythm Heaven Megamix. This collection mixes classic with new and remade microgames, boosting the count to over 300. If it weren’t so easy to breeze through Story Mode, I’d almost argue that gating these challenges behind a few hours of gameplay works against highlighting Gold‘s best assets.The leadoff game featured during the March Nintendo Direct, WarioWare Gold has finally arrived on Nintendo 3DS. There’s even a recreation of the mode from previous WarioWare titles where fledgling gamer 9-Volt has to hide the fact that he’s playing games after bedtime from his terrifying specter of a mother. One ruleset starts the action at the highest possible speed, making it an excellent test of reflexes, while another allows only a single mistake before it’s game over. Here is where Gold shows its capacity for longevity, with a number of macro-level rulesets that add much-needed variety and difficulty to the microgames on offer. Structure gives way to depth as its previously-segmented chunks of microgame goodness are stitched together in more compelling configurations. In a move as unconventional as Wario himself, the real meat of Gold, Challenge Mode, remains obscured until after Story Mode is complete. I hadn’t-it turns out that its 300 microgames speed by in the blink of an eye, particularly if, like me, you’ve seen many of them before in previous WarioWare titles. In fact, after I had completed the entire Story Mode in about two hours, I worried that I had missed something. Some are fairly funny, most are inoffensive, and all are over about as quickly as they begin.
Within this mode are eighteen collections of microgames, separated by genre and input style (touch, tilt, or button) and framed around one or more of Wario’s “friends.” The animated cutscenes that bookend these collections are innocuous enough, though I certainly wouldn’t call them the game’s main draw.
